Dean's Story

Dean Lewis died on February 27, 2017 at home at the age of 81. He was born in Perry, FL in 1935 to the parents of Hugh & Virgie Lewis. The family moved to Live Oak in 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, H. Wendell Lewis, and his beloved wife, Emma L. Lewis. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Caryl Lyn Lewis & Leigh L. Brown, and his grandson Noah Robert Owens.
Dean graduated from Suwannee High School in 1953, from Florida State with a B.S. degree in 1960, and from the University of Florida Law School in 1963 with a Jurist Doctorate. He was admitted to the practice of law in both the Florida and Federal Courts 1963. He practiced his profession in Live Oak and surrounding areas for approximately 40 years. He was one of the founders of the law firm of Airth, Sellers and Lewis in 1965. He was a member of the Third Circuit Bar Association and served on several committees and as chairman. At various times he served as the attorney for the City of Mayo, Lafayette County, Lafayette County School Board, and Suwannee Development Authority. He was attorney for Suwannee County for 21 years. Dean served on the Board of Directors of The First National Bank of Live Oak, which later became Barnett Bank. He also served as the director of the Branford State Bank.
He was active in the community affairs and served on many committees and at various times served as president of the Live Oak Lions Club, the Jaycees, the Kiwanis Club, the Suwannee Country Club and The local Shrine Club.
Dean was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Live Oak. At times he served on the finance committee, Pastor-Parrish Relations Committee, the Board of Trustees, and the Endowment Committee.
Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM, Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Daniels Funeral Homes & Crematory in Live Oak. Services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, March 3 at First United Methodist Church of Live Oak. Rev. John Hay & Rev. Dennis Resor will be officiating the services. Interment will follow at Live Oak Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 311 S. Ohio St. Live Oak, FL 32064.
