Deward's Story

Deward William (Dick) Vann, age 84, was born on January 3, 1933. He passed away on August 15, 2017, at Baptist South Medical Center, Room 771. He was surrounded by his loving wife Evelyn Louise Vann, son Donnie Vann, family, and friends.
Deward was known by his family and friends as "Dick" and in the military as "Vann". He attended Suwannee High School where he attended until 9th grade. He left school to help work on the family farm until he entered the United State Air Force. He spent 6 ½ years active duty in which he spent 3 years in Japan during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and settled in Jacksonville, Florida.
During his career, he attended and graduated from Florida Technical College. He furthered his education at Jones College, but due to conflicting work schedules, he decided to get out into the work force. He was employed by Sav-A-Stop, Crane Supply Company, City of Jacksonville and the State of Florida. He retired from the State of Florida on December 31, 1995. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Mandarin located on Orange Pickers Road. Dick married his wife Evelyn Louise Hart of Luraville on April 3, 1954. They had one son Donald Wayne Vann (Donnie).
Deward was preceded by both parents: Father Henry Oscar Vann and Mother Fannie Elizabeth Thomas Vann. He had five brothers and five sisters and only three are still surviving. He was a great husband and father. He loved to fish and hunt.
Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, August 20 in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. The Funeral Service will be held at 1 pm on Monday, August 21 at the Faith Baptist Church, 2955 Orange Picker Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32223. Interment to follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, 19233 77th Rd. McAlpin, FL 32062.
