Elia P. "Lee" Carver, age 95, of Live Oak, FL, passed away on Nov. 10, 2016 at the Advent Christian Village. The funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Live Oak. A luncheon at St. Luke's followed.
Lee was born to Paulo and Elia Santilli in Southbridge, MA on June 5, 1921. She grew up in Charlton, MA, graduated with a BA from Bates College and went to work for GE during WW II. She married Philip E. Porter of Charlestown, MA. They returned to Charlton to have a family and to work in the family grocery/liquor store. In 1955, tragedy struck when a dam broke, dramatically altering Lee's life, losing her parents, husband and first cousin and her home and business. Everything she knew in life, except for her children, was gone.
After the flood, Lee, showing the strength, fortitude, independence and determination by which all knew her, earned a teaching certificate and relocated in 1956 to St. Pete Beach, FL. Alone, she set about raising her three children, fiercely working to ensure that they received the best traditional education while making sure that they were culturally enlightened, politically aware, properly motivated and well-traveled. After years of self-sacrifice, she married Raymond B. Carver of Live Oak, FL in 1972.
She moved to Live Oak to become an integral part of Ray's extended family and the Live Oak community. She served the public as a Learning Disability Specialist in the Suwannee County School System. She worked closely with Ray, sharing offices for years. In fact, you could hardly find one without the other, in both work and play. They were inseparable until Ray's death in 2008.
Before and after retirement, Lee and Ray spent countless hours playing bridge with their friends in Live Oak and annually at The Cloisters, antiquing, traveling and splitting time between Live Oak, the North Carolina mountains and St. Pete Beach.
Lee is survived by Natalie, Paul and Mary-Beth Porter. She is also survived by Ray's children including his son, Mark, and Mark's wife and son, Ginger and Gabe Carver. Lee is also survived by her grandchildren, Elia and Stephanie Porter of Ponte Vedra Beach, Paul's children through his marriage to Cheryl Weidl Porter, who passed away in 2010.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to either St. Luke's Episcopal Church or the Jo Kennon Library at the Advent Christian Village, Dowling Park (Live Oak), Florida.
