Garrett Ellsworth Carroll
Ellsworth Carroll, 78, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He began and ended his life in a place he loved, Live
Oak, Florida. In 1961 while in college, he married Sara Kathryn Scroggin, and they made a life together with their daughters, Sherrie and Terri, in Ocala, Live Oak, Baton Rouge, Jacksonville
and Tallahassee.
The younger son of Garrett and Alice Carroll, he graduated from Suwannee High School in 1959 where he was active in Future Farmers of America. He earned a Bachelor's of Science in
Business Administration from The University of Florida and later a Master's in Welfare Administration from Louisiana State University. He began his professional career as director of the welfare office in Live Oak and then established and directed the food stamp program for the state of Florida. He then worked for the Auditor General of Florida. Throughout his career, he mentored countless coworkers, helping them see the big picture around their work and
decisions. After retiring, he volunteered as the church administrator for the First Baptist Church of Tallahassee and traveled throughout the US with Kathy in their motorhome and at
times with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Homer and Marilyn Scroggin, right beside them.
Ellsworth was a loving husband and father and a loyal and generous friend. He was known for his quick wit, dry sense of humor, leadership and wise counsel. He loved to be
surrounded by the activity and laughter of his family and friends and the crazy antics of his Boston terriers.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathy Carroll, who he loved completely; his daughters, Sherrie Carroll and Terri Wharff; son-in-law Dr. Jeffrey Wharff; grandchildren,Michael and Sara Wharff; Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Homer and Marilyn Scroggin, and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. May he rest well in heaven, reunited with his parents, siblings, dear friends, and beloved pets as he "supervises" the angels.
Services were held at First Baptist Church of Live Oak at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 31st.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
