Gerald "Jerry"'s Story
Gerald "Jerry" Eugene Vandergrift, 89, Lake City, FL went to his Heavenly Home on Thursday, December 21, 2017 following a long illness. His sparkling smile and gentle loving demeanor touched all who knew him. Jerry served in the US Army Air Force during WWII. His specialty and qualifications were Airplane & Engine Mechanic/Instructor, B-26 Specialist and Sharp Shooter. After military service, his GI loan helped him earn a Master's Degree in Special Education and a B.A. in Mathematics. He taught for several years in West Virginia then moved to Florida in 1968. He retired from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in 1993. Jerry was a member of Hopeful Baptist Church. Mr. Vandergrift is survived by his wife of 32 years, Julia Vandergrift, Lake City, FL; Sons: Larry Vandergrift, OK and David L. Vandergrift, FL; Stepchildren: Eva Gincig, CA; Mary Laakkonen, FL and David Cullipher, CA; Sister: Christine Vangilder, WV; Brothers: Ron (Marie) Vandergrift WV; Marvin (Margie) Vandergrift, NC; Darryl (Sandy) Vandergrift, WV; Larry (Sharon) Vandergrift, WV; Three Grandchildren: Eric, Brett and Bryce; Three Stepgrandchildren: Joshua, Megan and Morgan. His services will be held at 2:00 p.m., with viewing beginning at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Daniels Memorial Chapel, Live Oak, FL. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. Richard Rodriguez will be officiating the services.
