James Murray Fortner


James "Jimmy" Murray Fortner, age 100, passed away on July 28, 2019. He was born in Live Oak, FL, a graduate of Suwannee High School and attended the University of Florida. Jimmy was enlisted in the Florida National Guard, later promoted to Lieutenant, serving in the Army Air Force as an instructor in the Technical Training Command during World War II. After his military service, he returned to Live Oak and worked in several different positions, including the U.S. Post office. He left Live Oak to work in the Lincoln Mercury division of the Ford Motor Company at various different dealers in the southeast, under the Dealer Development Program, ending his service at a dealership in Tallahassee.
He worked with the Florida Department of Agriculture in the Inspection Division and retired as a Bureau Chief.
Jimmy loved to fish and hunt, and enjoyed spending time at his cottage on Lake Mystic, Bristol, FL, and then his cottage on the Cullasaja River in Franklin, NC.
Jimmy was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and has been active for more than (70) years. He was also Novel and a life member of the Morocco Shrine Temple, Jacksonville, FL, and has been active for more than (50) years.
He served as a volunteer at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, in the Cancer Center, from 2008 to August 2018, receiving the Silver Star not aware in 2003. At TMH, he was known as "Mr. Jimmy".
He was devoted to his family and friends, and was admired by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alford and Nonie Fortner, and his wife, Josephine "Jo" Fortner. He is survived by his stepchildren, Linda Jo Pararo, Sheila Winchester (Mark), Rick Pararo (Carla), Pam Butler (Kenny), and Kim Outlaw (Steve); 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, FL on Tuesday, July 30th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Morningside Baptist Church, 1560 Pedrick Rd., Tallahassee, FL, on Wednesday, July 31st at 11:00 AM with burial services to follow at Roselawn Cemetery, Tallahasee, FL.
