James Ray Johnson, 93, of Tampa, Fla. passed from this life and into the presence of the Lord on Monday, Aug. 29, 2016. Mr. Johnson was born and raised in Live Oak, Fla. Although he lived the last 28 years of his life in Tampa, Fla., he was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Live Oak, where his family has attended services for many years.
Mr. Johnson joined the army at an early age to fight for his country in World War II with the 158th Engineers Combat Battalion. He fought in all five European Battle Campaigns including Utah Beach in Normandy, as well as the Korean War. He retired from the US Army in December of 1968.
He is survived by Yolonda, his wife of 34 years, five daughters, Janet Zygarlowski of Madison, Fla., Nelly Cagle, Nannette Kimbro (Ray), Neena Funicelli, of Live Oak, Fla. and Rhonda Sopp of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by a step-son, Kevin Hart of Morgan, Ca. Also, Mike Sopp of Tampa, Fla., who he considered the son with which he had never been blessed. Mr. Johnson is further survived by 11 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation for Mr. Johnson will be from 6-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2 at Daniels Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc. Services will begin at 10 a.m. on Sept. 3 at the Philadelphia Baptist Church and interment will follow at their Cemetery. Please sign the guestbook at www.danielsfuneralhome.com.
