John Waldon Hughes

John Waldon Hughes, 93, Live Oak, FL passed away on Jan. 22, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born Jan. 14, 1924 in Statenville, GA to John and Mary Helen Hughes, John was the oldest of 10 children. He grew up in Lowndes and Echols Counties in GA. He served as a Medical Corpsman in the US Navy/Marines where he served in World War II. John worked in Georgia Ace Fertilizer/US Agriculture Chemical, Valdosta, GA until he moved down, worked and purchased Huffman and Gilmore Feed and Farm in 1978.
John was married to Allison Nadine Hughes for 60 years. John loved working and helping others. He is most known for his commitment to the farming community and the youth of Suwannee County. He spent countless hours working at Huffman and Gilmore making sure his friends and customers had everything they or the animals needed.
John is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Sam) Rothenberger and Gwen (Eddie) Leathlean; nine grandchildren, John (Courtney) Rothenberger, Melissa (Keith) Morgan, Rachel Rothenberger, Roger (Charity) Palmer, Jennifer (John) McMillan, Chris (Rheba) Rothenberger, Chip Leathlean, Lee Leathlean, Laura (Tomas) Reyes; fifteen great-grandchildren, Brittney Morgan, Brandy Morgan, Lawson Leathlean, Devon Brady, Michael Rothenberger, Noah Rothenberger, Joshua Rothenberger, Haley Rothenberger, Benjamin Gu, Leah Gu, Rebecca Gu, Jordan Rothenberger, Ian McMillan, Colin McMillan; one great-great-grandchild, Isabella; one brother, George Hughes; two sisters, Leona Stanley and Mary Ruth Weaver.
John is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Allison Hughes; brothers, Rayford Hughes, Benny Ellingson, Bill Ellingson; sisters, Evelyn Harnage, Carolyn Sasser and Jean Bennett. Hospice was very helpful in John's loving care during his last few months. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Haven Hospice 6037 West US Hwy 90 Lake City, Fl 32055.
