John Gerald Lathrop, 70, passed Saturday July 16, 2016 at Select Specialty Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.
He leaves his wife, Roberta (Johnson) Lathrop, sister Donna (Mickey), brother Donald (Joann), daughter and son in law Christy and Shawn, daughter and son in law Kim and Les, six grandchildren Tabitha (Alex), Jonathan (Shelby), Aidan, Whitney (Eddie), Lauren, United States Army SPC Dylan, two great-grandchildren Jack and Georgianna and countless close friends.
Born Sept. 25, 1945 in Davenport, Ia., John graduated from Central High School in 1963. After graduating, he met his wife Bobbie Johnson through mutual friends and they married in 1966 at St. Marks Lutheran Church. Soon after, he started his career at Roadway Express in Rock Island, Il. which lead to a promotion and transfer to Kansas City, Mi. in 1983.
John retired from Roadway in 2001 and lived out his dream of moving to Florida. John loved watching sports and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and spent every non football Sunday watching NASCAR races. While belonging to the McAlpin Community Center for years, John was voted in as president and until just recently held that position.
John's wishes were to be cremated , so a Celebration of Life gathering will take place Thursday, July 21 from 4-8 p.m. at the McAlpin Community Center, across 129 from the McAlpin Post Office. The family will be providing a meal, so they are asking everyone to please bring a side dish and help celebrate his life and share a memory. In leau of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to www.diabetes.org/donate.
