Johnny passed away at his home on Sunday evening, December 3, 2017, after battling health issues for the past several years. Johnny is survived by his wife, Peggy (Scurry) Severance of Waycross, GA, with whom he had resided for the past 7 years. He is also survived by his son, Mark (Jaime) Severance of Jacksonville, FL; 2 brothers, Nick (Cynthia) Dees of Warner Robins, GA and Donald (Sherry) Severance of Tallahassee, FL; 4 sisters, Norma (Jim) Phillips of Palm Harbor, FL, Mary Ann (Pat) Sura of Live Oak, Betty (Gene) Crosby of Live Oak and Sheryl (Cliff) Hunter of Live Oak. Survivors also include several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Johnny was predeceased in death by his parents, Hubert and Florence (Andrews) Severance of Live Oak; 3 brothers, Jack Dees, Buddy Dees and Fred Severance, and 1 sister, Gail Driggers.
Johnny graduated from Suwannee High School in 1965. He entered the U.S. Army and served his country honorably, first in Germany, and then in the infantry in Viet Nam. For most of his remaining life Johnny suffered from the emotional and physical scars that many soldiers did who returned home from that war.
Johnny was a private person, and even in death, his wish was to protect those he loved from the grief associated with a funeral service. He maintained his good sense of humor until the end and loved to laugh and talk about the fun times growing up together and the mischief he and his friends would get into. He was a big bear of a man with the heart of a teddy bear. He was loved and he will be missed.
It was Johnny's will to be returned to Live Oak, the place he called home and that he loved most of all. A private memorial service for him will be held at a later date. Music Funeral Home of Waycross was in charge of the arrangements.
