Leamon's Story

Leamon Gill, also known as L.H. Gill passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017. He was born in Live Oak, Florida, April 22, 1927. He was one of eight children of Luther & Alma Gill.
He married Ellen Z Gill on August 15, 1947. They were married for 60 years until her passing on July 18, 2008. Leamon started his career as a gasoline attendant at Howland's and some years later the operator of the Pure Oil Station (back when you would ask the customer to check your oil and tire pressure and wash your windshield).
Afterwards, he opened and operated Gill Tire Company located on West Howard St. He continued this business until his retirement in 1978. He also operated a fuel oil distribution business, known as Gill Oil Company, for the delivery of fuel for farmers and small service stations. He retired from that business in 1982.
His other activities included the ownership and operation of a cattle farm where he had upwards of 200 head of angus cattle. This was a cow-calf operation. Once he scaled down his operations to less than 50 head of cattle, he then pursued the hobby of cross-breeding cattle, such as Senepol, Santa Gertrudis, Red Angus, Black Angus and Brangus.
After discontinuing his cattle business, he still stayed in contact with various Suwannee County farmers with the Soil Conservation program, where he would coordinate and deliver the non-tilling planting equipment to area farmers for no-till planting. In 1965, Leamon was encouraged by concerned citizens to run for School Board. He obliged, and was elected and served as a School Board Member and was chosen as the School Board Chairman in 1965. This was a great accomplishment for Leamon, since his highest school grade was the 8th grade. During this time of life (about 1941), his family needed him to work at the family farm and they couldn't spare him to attend the later grades.
Leamon was a military veteran who served in the Army Air Core within the post exchange service from 1945-1947 in the Philippians. After the war, he accepted Christ in his life and he wanted to serve through his church and bear witness of Jesus's love to others. He found that his best ministry is to be a loyal member of the Gideon's International. Starting in 1978, he became a member of the Lake City camp and then later he assisted in the start of the Live Oak Gideon's camp. He served as treasurer for many years.
Leamon, along with many other faithful Gideon members were instrumental in delivery of numerous bibles to the public schools and other institutions. He was always giving away bibles and information pamphlets whenever he could. Leamon was a member, since 1960, of Westwood Baptist Church, and previously served as a deacon at Westwood Baptist Church and served as chairman of deacons for many years.
He is survived by four children, Linda Weidner (Nick) of Mesa, AZ, Barbara Mann of Live Oak, Paul Gill (Debbie) of Branford, FL and John Gill (Allison) of Live Oak; and 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and a brother, Randall Gill of Live Oak. Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Westwood Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Deas and Dr. Ben Bush officiating. Interment will follow in the Live Oak Cemetery.
