Leon Nickson McDonald III (Hughes)
Leon Hughes, 57, of Burnsville, North Carolina passed away Saturday, November 9, 2019 at his home following a lengthy illness. Lee was born in Tallahassee, Florida and spent his early years in Gainesville, Florida, later moving to Live Oak, Florida.

Lee is the eldest son of Glenda McCullers McDonald Hughes and the late Leon Nickson McDonald Jr. and the adopted son of Alfred Lloyd Hughes Jr.

In addition to his mother and adoptive father, he is survived by his brothers Greg Hughes and wife Mary Beth of Burnsville, Timothy Hughes of Burnsville, Jeremiah Hughes and wife Tina of Raleigh, and sister Sally McDonald of Asheville, several nieces and nephews, one great niece and two great nephews as well as numerous cousins.

Lee was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Alton and Mildred McCullers of Live Oak, Florida and his paternal grandparents Leon and Ann McDonald of Live Oak, Florida.

Lee loved life and was grateful for every day God allowed him to be here on earth. An automobile accident left Lee a quadriplegic in 1986. He recovered quite well and went on to attend Tallahassee Community College and from there, Florida State University where he received his B.S. degree in Social Work. He was always up for the challenge in spite of his disability. He grew up with a love for the outdoors; hunting, fishing, canoe trips and camping along the Suwannee River. Lee was once active in tutoring young children in reading and mathematics. He was an avid history buff, especially Civil War history, enjoyed coin collecting and firearms.

Lee loved the Lord and did his best to share God's love whenever the opportunity arose. He supported Dr. Charles Stanley's In Touch Ministries and attended church services via television on Sunday mornings with his mother by his side.

There will be a graveside service to celebrate Leon's life at 2:00 pm Friday, November 15, 2019 at Live Oak Cemetery.
