Leroy Danby Lewis ("Dan") was born on Apr. 9, 1931 in Clifton, VA, to Ralph Colton Lewis and Doris Dillon Lewis. Born in an old farmhouse, he was the youngest of four children; one brother and two sisters. Dan grew up working on the farm until 1945 when his uncle talked his dad into moving to Coral Gables, FL.
Following high school, Dan chose to enlist in the Marines because he was influenced by the Korean War. While attending high school in Florida, Dan met his first wife, Jean and they were married in Miami.
They raised their four children in that area until moving to Live Oak in 1972 when he started Suwannee Auto Salvage and enlisted the help of his three sons in the business that still exists today.
Dan met and married Marianne Self in 2001 and they have resided on the family ranch. Dan was a kind, generous man who was active in his church, loved animals, restoring old cars and traveling. He is survived by his wife Marianne, sister Nancy Collier, three sons; Danny (wife, Pam), Larry (wife, Dena) and Brad (wife, Amy), daughter, Lisa Perez Reyesas (husband, Guillermo), and one stepdaughter, Suzy Burch (husband, David) as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The services were held Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church 1308 Irvin Ave. SW Live Oak, FL 32064 (Morman Church) with visitation from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and the services began at 4:30 p.m.
