Raymond Virgil Grooms


Raymond Virgil Grooms, Sr., age 91, of Live Oak, FL, passed away, Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the Lake City V.A. Medical Center.
He graduated high school in 1944 and entered into active service in July 1945. The WWII Veteran was honorably discharged as a seaman second class from the USN personnel separation center, NAS Charleston, SC on the 21st day of July 1946. He was a recipient of the WWII victory medal. He later received an honorable discharge from the USN reserve as an E-6 in June 1969.
The Orangeburg, SC, native moved to Live Oak from Goose Creek, SC in June 1995. He was a member of the Mary Belle Baptist Church, a mason and member of Carolina Lodge #375 in North Charleston, SC and a member of the Shrine and American Legion.
When he found the time, he loved both fresh and salt water fishing, hunting was another favorite thing to do if it wasn't too cold and taking his wife Irma with him, even though he said she would loudly crunch on saltine crackers to scare the deer away. He spent his quiet time crafting, bear, elephants, and giraffes for family and friends out of wood. He especially enjoyed making items for the four year old class at Westwood Baptist Church.
He was a great electrician and retired from the Polaris Missile Base in Goose Creek, SC.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Grooms, Live Oak; one son, Raymond (Ruth) Grooms, Jr., Live Oak; two daughters, Debbie Inman, Goose Creek, SC; Renea (Larry) Dangerfield, Live Oak; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 10, 2019 in the Mary Belle Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Curls and Rev. Morgan Cambell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to V.A. Hospice, 619 S. Marion St., Lake City, FL 32025 or D.A.V., 226 Parshley St., Live Oak, FL 32064.
