Dr. Robert Kenneth Jones, a great-great grandson of Lafayette County Pioneer Ariel Jones, passed away at his home in North Carolina on Sept. 15, 2016. Kenneth was born in Branford, Florida on Aug. 29, 1929 to his parents Oscar Zachariah Jones, who for many years owned and operated the Standard Oil Station in Branford and Mildred Johnson Jones, a dedicated mother and homemaker.
He attended the Branford Methodist Church sometimes playing his trumpet or piano. He graduated as Valedictorian of his 1947 class at Branford High School. Kenneth attended the University of Florida on a Florida State Teaching Scholarship and was a member of the Gator Marching Band. Later, he would further his education receiving both a Bachelor and a Masters degree at the University of Florida and then a Doctorate in Education from the University of Southern California.
Kenneth began his teaching career at his alma mater, Branford High School. He was then drafted into the Army. After completing his basic training, he was selected to attend Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA where he graduated and received his commission as Second Lieutenant in The United States Army. Kenneth attained the rank of First Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1960.
After his military commitment, Ken returned to his teaching career. He taught science and math for a while at Santa Fe High School in Alachua County. Kenneth had a desire to travel so he chose to continue his career teaching and later as principal at overseas Department of Defense Dependent Schools. He would serve at schools in Germany, Japan, Spain and England before retiring.
While serving in Germany, he met and married another American teacher, Judith Sheldon, who shared his love of travel. Kenneth was predeceased by his father and mother, his first wife and mother of his children, Judith Sheldon Jones; his brother-in-law, Leo M. Nerenberg and niece, Rebecca Adams Green. He is survived by his second wife, Nancy Jones; his daughter, Eve Jones Owen (Eric) and his son, Zachary Sheldon Jones (Andrea).
Kenneth is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth C. Jones, MD. and husband Layman Wilkinson, Esther Jones Adams (Eldon) and Laura Ruth Jones Miller (Judge Jeff). He is survived by four grandchildren, Sarah Owen, Evan Owen, Abby Jones and Maya Jones; nephews, Curt Nerenberg (Lori) and Jeffords Miller, Jr. (Anna Rae); nieces, Amy Nerenberg Wynn (Holly), Ellen Nerenberg Volario (Anthony), Laura Nerenberg Hanigan (Tim) and Jenifer Adams Mitchell (Mitch).
At his request, final arrangements were private.
