Harwood J. "Buddy" Evans, Jr., 74, of Palatka, passed from this life on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville Beach following an extended illness. Born in Day, FL, Buddy grew up in Mayo and moved to Live Oak in his junior year in high school and graduated from Suwannee High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Valdosta State College and served in the U.S. Army Reserves and the National Guard. Buddy moved to Palatka in 1965 where he taught math and coached football and track at Palatka Senior High School for 2 years. He then began working at Florida Power and Light where he served for 28 years.
From 1994 to the present, Buddy worked as an insurance agent with Bates, Hewett & Floyd Insurance Agency. Years ago, Buddy served as President of the Palatka Jaycees and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Palatka. He had also served as chairman of the Board at the Former Briarwood School.
Buddy was a very active and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Palatka where he had served as a Deacon, as a Trustee and sang in the choir. He had likewise been a long-time supporter of the Rodeheaver Boys Ranch. In his leisure time, Buddy enjoyed hunting and knife collecting, but more importantly was time devoted to being with his beloved family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harwood J. Evans, Sr. and Bernice Williams Evans.
Buddy is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Joyce Tillis Evans of Palatka, two daughters, Staci Trimas and husband Scott of Ponte Vedra and Leigh Anne Lands and husband Chris of Palatka, four sisters, Linda Dees and husband Rudolph of Orange Park, Nell McCullers and husband Dale of Waycross, GA, Frankie Allen and husband Frank of Live Oak and Elaine Crapps and the late James Crapps of Live Oak, five grandchildren, Morgan Trimas, Evan Trimas, Gracen Trimas, Emily Lands and Matthew Lands and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Buddy's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Palatka with Bro. Eddie Parcher officiating. Burial will follow at West View Cemetery in Palatka. The family will receive friends Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.
