Mack's Story

Text size

Mack Allen Buswell, 95, died February 4, 2017 at the Lake City VA Medical Center Hospice Center. Mr. Buswell was born on October 30, 1921 in Chattanooga, Oklahoma to Fred and Virgie Buswell. He was the oldest of 5 children. Mack and his wife, Ruth, of 73 years lived in McAlpin, FL. Mack served aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter 'Mohawk' during WWII. He joined Eastern Airlines in 1952 on the Radio Line in Miami. He transferred to Ground Communications 5 years later where he remained until retirement. Mack retired from Eastern Airlines in 1982 after 30 years of faithful service.
Mack had three loves in his life: family, farming and flying. While still living and working in Miami, Mack and Ruth purchased farm property in 1968 in Brooksville to raise livestock and fresh vegetables. Mack got the flying bug and earned his pilot's license in 1972 because the commute to Miami from Brooksville was much easier when one flies! His first plane was a C-150, then he traded up for a C-172 in 1976. They retired to the Brooksville farm in 1982, but didn't stay long. Mack and Ruth moved to Little River Flying Estates in 1984, and traded in for a C-120. As one can tell, Mack just can't sit still for long, he began building a Pietenpol plane in McAlpin. In 2007, they sold their planes and focused on farming again. Most days, you would find Mack out in his 'garden' doing what he loved to do. At 90, he went and bought himself another tractor. A fine example of a man living life honestly, with integrity, and full of hard work. Mack could teach the young people of this country a few lessons.
Mack is survived by his wife Ruth; five children, Daniel Buswell, Teresa Migneco, Robert Buswell, Gerald Buswell, and Nancy Conklin; three sisters, Joyce McCary, Peggy McCary and Pat Andrews; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, Mack was preceded in death by his son, Richard Buswell; and his brother, Jack Buswell.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 12 at 1 PM at Little River Flying Estates Clubhouse on 73rd Place, McAlpin. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations are to be sent to Lake City VA Medical Center, 619 S. Marion Avenue, Lake City, FL 32025-5808. Please make checks payable to the VA Volunteer Services, and, in the memo line, state it is for the 3 South Hospice Unit, Mack Buswell.
