Mrs. Phyllis Sperring Houston, 69, a longtime resident of Lake City, passed away unexpectedly at her residence on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016. A native of Live Oak, FL, Mrs. Houston was the daughter of the late Ollen and Julia Koon Sperring. She moved to Lake City in 1966 and earned her Registered Nursing Degree from the nursing program at Lake City Community College.
She worked for a time at Lake Shore Hospital, then with Dr. Charles Ozaki in his pediatric practice. She was a school nurse for a brief time and also worked as an industrial nurse with Homes of Merit. She was the co-owner and operator of the DeSoto Drug Store & Restaurant until recently retiring. Mrs. Houston volunteered with the Hospice of North Florida, the first Hospice in Columbia County, for ten years and served on several church sponsored medical mission trips to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. She enjoyed traveling, attending her weekly card playing group and was especially fond of caring for her mother.
Mrs. Houston is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald Ray Houston; her two sons, Eric Houston and his wife, Juliette of Gainesville, FL and Adam Houston of Lake City, FL; and her brother, Clyde Sperring of Live Oak, FL. Three grandchildren, Brett Michael Houston, Steven Tyler Houston and Abbygail Lynn Houston also survive.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday evening in the Chapel of the Dees-Parrish Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to either the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center, PO Box G, White Springs, FL 32096 or to the Ichetucknee Partnership(5013c) (Childrens Programs), Lake City/Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, 162 S. Marion Ave., Lake City, FL 32025.
